Class Overview

Curriculum development

 The purpose of the establishment of the graduate school is, based on the fundamental principles of the Red Cross, especially humanity, to nurture nursing specialists with advanced specialties and skills, including researchers and educators who have abilities to practice in the field of nursing study, special nurses who completed maternity, pediatric and psychiatric nursing studies and nursing manager and leaders who have risk management skills against disaster, infection, etc. We produce the curriculum to achieve this purpose. One of the characteristics is that we aim to nurture two kinds of abilities that would develop together; clinical judgment and behavioral abilities that lead clinical sites (including regional sites), and educational and leadership capabilities. In the 21st century, health issues and related life problems are becoming more diversified and complicated. We produced a curriculum that allows students to acquire highly advanced practical skills to create the latest nursing knowledge. Using the skills, we hope that, by considering nursing from the viewpoint of ordinary citizen, they develop nursing skills and care systems for the people of various health level including women of perinatal period, children, adults and the aged at the places that require nursing such as regional sites, hospitals and various facilities.

1. Curriculum that consists of four domains and seven areas (Diagram 1)

Nursing management study, which gives priority to the development of nursing administrators and leaders who can handle issues including risk management
Clinical practical nursing study, which focuses on the improvement of nursing related to perioperative nursing practice, which is significantly changing, how to cope with the society with declining birth rate and the perinatal issues and the critical condition of mental issues in stressful modern society (four areas of adult acute stage, maternity, pediatric and psychiatric nursing studies)
Community health nursing study, which mainly focuses on health issues and promotes health of the people of all generations in the community.
Disaster nursing study that focuses on the health issues of each period of the disaster cycle


2. The following two courses are established to match with the goal of the students:

Researcher and educator course

 It is a course that improves specialty of the nursing domain/area for the development of research ability. The school has four domains and seven areas of nursing management study, clinical practical nursing study (adult acute stage, maternity, pediatric and psychiatric nursing studies), community health nursing study and disaster nursing study.
The number of units required for the completion of this course is 32 or over.

Specialist nurse (Certified Nurse Specialist: CNS) course

 This is a course for students who aim to become certified nurse specialist in the future. This course is proved in accordance with the standards for certified nurse specialist program, which intend to maintain and improve the quality of certified nurse specialist with highly advanced expertise and skills. Three areas of maternity, pediatric and psychiatric nursing studies have certified nurse specialist course.
The curriculum of the certified nurse specialist course of this school follows the standards for certified nurse specialist program defined by Japan Association of Nursing Programs in Universities.
The number of units required for the completion of this course is 32 or over for maternity nursing study and 34 units and over for pediatric and psychiatric nursing studies.

3. Enhancement of common subject

 A wide area of common subjects are offered for students to study the basic theory and research skills of nursing study, which has connection with the development of the studies in the domain, as well as the theory and research skills of various related sciences.

Mandatory common subject

 We set four mandatory common subjects; Nursing theory, which is essential to the nursing system development and provision, Nursing research I (quantitative study), which allows student to study the basic knowledge and skills of nursing research to actually utilize at the site of both nursing and education, Nursing ethics, which considers ethics of nursing specialists from various viewpoints, and History of the Red Cross and Nursing, which pursues nursing education and the roles of nurses through the history of the Japanese Red Cross Society, which has been dedicated to humanitarian activities.

Elective common subject

 We offer the following 13 elective common subjects; Nursing Society study, which considers how people should be and human relationship using modern sociology theory and philosophy, Medical business management, in which students learn about organization management required for the medical industry including leadership, human recourses development, business improvement and laws, International humanitarian law, which pursues humanity, the basic principle of the Red Cross, from the viewpoint of international law,Pathophysiology and Clinical pharmacology, which allows students to understand cell-level pathology and pharmacology required for the implementation of high-level nursing, Health assessment, which nurtures highly advanced assessment skill to comprehensively grasp physical, psychological and social aspects, Statistics study, in which students study analysis methods to expand the fundamental knowledge of research of nursing topics, and Nursing research II (qualitative research), in which students study about quality research, Consultation theory, which CNCs requires to when they assist people in solving issues, and “Nurses’ motional management”, which focus on nurses’ emotion.
In addition, as the basic subjects to support highly advanced practice, the school added the followings to the curriculum of the Specialist nurse course presented by Japan Association of Nursing Programs in Universities: Pathophysiology, Clinical pharmacology and Health assessment.
